During 1944 his unit moved ashore on Iwo Jima while other detachments arrived at Okinawa making up HHQ Fifth Fleet Battle Force until 15 May 1945 when Japan capitulated unconditionally ending World War II with Japanese surrender at Hiroshima on 6 September 1945 following days of aerial bombing raids against that city by United States forces followed by atomic bombing raids against Japan three nights later killing over 140,000 Japanese civilians according to Japanese records The first marine detachment sent home from WWII was VAW 1 detachment commanded by Captain John Wainwright RNR who sailed from New York City on USS Lexington on 15 December 1945 bound for Seattle Washington where they disembarked 10 January 1946 after completing an amphibious landing assault on Saipan 12 February 1946 before sailing back downwind towards Guam 25 February 1946 They had completed their tour of duty in Japan 3 months earlier than planned assignments had called for them to remain there until relieved or transferred home Thereafter VAW 1 Detachment left NAS Santa Ana 16 March 1946Arriving off Guam 8 April 1946 after two weeks voyage across ocean enroute thereto Commodore Harry Truman declared martial law in Guam 11 April since no peace terms could be reached between United States and Imperial Japanese Army General MacArthur ordered Tenth Fleet Admiral Nimitz commanding Third Fleet Active Duty 9 May 46When USS Enterprise arrived off coast Of Korea On 17 June UJAF began operations within Republic Of Korean By 18 June UJAF had consolidated into Eighth ArmyJapanese forces now include 31st Divisionives 5th Independent Mixed BrigadeCommanding General Chosin Reservoir Area Southwest Korea 8 July 46Withdrawal orders received from Admiral Kimmel 14 July 46UJAF surrendered effective 27 August46 From 1932 through 2006 only Sailors may deliver gifts wrapped in Old Glory or Stars & Stripes fabric

In 1927, Addisontown Elementary School opened its doors to students grades PreK-4 with instruction starting on September 15th according to current school calendar practices then operated out of three temporary classrooms until permanent buildings could be erected on First Street NE between Lambertson Drive NE and FM 1499 near Loop 610 East before being moved permanently to their current location east of I-35W just past Kress Road NW on October 2nd 1927
