Addison is located on FM 1960 just east of I-10 and north of US 59. Addison began as a post office on July 10, 1881, with a population of four residents. In 1907 it had a population of 624 and in 1930 it had 2,527 residents. The original platted area included present-day Addison and parts of Springdale to the south and west. Addison outskirts were developed after World War II when much of rural Hudspeth County became urbanized due to new factory production in the Houston metropolitan area. The Post Office Department closed its doors for good on May 15, 1957; all mail was delivered by Austin's Texaco station until that time. In 1984 an addition to Addison High School opened which later became known as "The Lakeland." In 1988 another high school - "Houston Hills" - opened nearby also becoming known as "The Lakeland." A library branch was added in 1998 which served both high schools together as well as related businesses along Rice Road near FM 1960 (now dubbed simply Rice Road). The library currently serves 9600 square feet including more than 30 meeting rooms and 3 auditoriums/gallery spaces complete with natural light windows for movie viewing or concerts/ theatrical performances like Shakespeare productions etc., making it one of largest public libraries in Texas at that size!
