Addison is a small town located in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by General Addison Sherman and his wife, Maria. The first post office was in Addison, opened on November 25, 1879. In 1907 the name of the community was changed to Addison Center due to growth and development within the community. Addison is known for its cotton production and has been a center of textile production since the early 1800s. The area where Addison now stands served as a plantation until 1865 when it became part of Houston County. There were several large plantations in Angelina County during this time including Charles Town (now Weslaco), Magnolia, Buffalo Bayou Plantation (now Springtown), Elmendorf and Big Timber plantations which all produced cotton until around 1900 when they were converted into cattle stations. In 1915 an agreement was made between Anglo American Corporation and Humble Oil Company under which AngloAmerican would own thirty-five percent of all new U.S.-produced cotton after World War I ended; however, this Agreement failed to gain favor with local farmers who saw it as another example of big business taking advantage of small farmers throughout America In 1923 some locals petitioned for annexation by Austin because they felt that their smaller towns did not have the same level of cultural or social significance as larger cities such as Austin The vote to annex wasn't approved but due to growing civic activity within Addison over the next few years various plans were put forth to annex Addisons land In 1929 there was a referendum asking residents if they wanted annexed into Austin; although only sixty people voted in favor annexation it showed that there may be support amongst residents for annexation In 1933 an ordinance requesting city council approval for annexation passed without incident On December 5th 1934 Mayor John Waddell announced that annexing Addisons land had been approved and incorporation began on January 1st 1935 with Mayor Waddell presiding over incorporation ceremonies The citizens of Addison quickly got organized and created their own government including elections which took place on April 15th 1935 Cotton production ceased after World War II but has been revived through various initiatives such as planting more acreage near water sources so that it can continue generationally
