Addison was founded in 1836 by James Addison and his wife, Jane. The city was originally named "Frisco" after General Frisco. It was renamed "Addison" in honor of the English statesman, James Addison, 1st Viscount Addington. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was founded, but grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location at the heart of the American West. The first store in Addison opened in 1837. By 1840, there were two stores and 12 homes. The town continued to grow until it had a population of over 10,000 people by 1850. In that year, the legislature established a school system for the townsfolk and also created a courthouse and jail. Addison became an important stop on the Overland Mail route between Omaha and Sacramento during the early days of the American West. In 1856, construction began on what is now City Hall Square – one of Edmonton’s earliest municipal buildings – and Addisons key role as local government center continued through this period. During this time period, Addisons economy flourished thanks to its natural resources including oil shale and coal seam gas that were found near present-day downtown Addison. In 1870, following annexation by Austin County, Texas ( then part of Mexico), much development took place withinADDISON limits as developers looked for new opportunities for growth outside of Austin County boundaries – most notably with oil production from nearby shale formations beginning in earnest around this time). However despite efforts by many residents to make their city more environmentally friendly during this time period; ADDISON reached its peak population size with over 25K residents by 1907 however rapid suburban growth eventually resulted in an overall decrease in resident populations throughout these years leading up to World War I (in which ADDISON played no small role). Following World War IADDISON experienced another decline as families fled into surrounding rural areas seeking economic opportunity post-war while industry slowly died off leaving few traces remaining behinddespite efforts made later in the 20th century both through redevelopment initiatives as well as historical preservation programs; however some recent attempts have started to resurrect some life back into downtown ADDISON while creating new jobs/residential projects inside CITY SQUARE itself
