The city experienced rapid growth due to its location on the Sabine River and its access to railroads which made it possible for businesses to expand quickly into new markets. In addition, Abilene's position as a crossroad allowed trade between nearby counties and heads of states such as Ulysses S Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt to develop relationships that would later lead to cooperation during World War II. Today, Abilene is known for its agricultural production which has led to it becoming one of America's leading agricultural centers; however, its downtown area remains popular tourist destination with events taking place throughout the year including music festivals and fairs

Over time, the city grew and became an important local center for trade and business. In 1907, Abilene annexed the City of Mission Viejo, California.
