Abilene, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas. The population was 812 at the 2010 census. The town of Abilene was named after General John C. Abilene and his brigade who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1870, the town had a population of only 10 people. In 1876, the first post office opened in Abilene and it remained open until 1907. The first school in Abilene opened in 1875 and served grades K-8. On November 6th, 1907, Abileno's incorporation as an official city occurred with 513 votes against 54 cast by citizens of other towns within Midland County that were not incorporated into the new city limits. The original downtown area now includes more than 25 buildings dating from before 1850 to present day including: First Presbyterian Church (1850), Second Presbyterian Church (1870), Masonic Temple (1907), Post Office Administration Building (1876), Cotton Oil Company Building (1910), United States courthouse building (1920) and many more! In 1839, the Republic of Texas was annexed by Mexico, which left Abilene without official jurisdiction. In 1840, Congress passed an act creating the Territory of New Mexico and giving that territory exclusive jurisdiction over all British possessions east of the Rio Grande River. This Act did not include Abilene, so local officials continued to seek recognition from Washington D.C. On July 12, 1846, President James K Polk announced that he would be recognizing Mexican independence as part of his broader strategy for containing French influence in North America. On December 10th, Ulysses S Grant issued a proclamation recognizing Mexican independence and awarding land grants to individuals who had helped establish it – including some Americans living in Mexico City – known as the Grants’ Gift . In 1850, after months of negotiation between representatives from both countries, an agreement was reached under which both nations agreed to cede control over their respective airspace to each other (the first such agreement between any two countries). This agreement remains one of the most important landmark moments in U.S.-Mexico relations today
