In 1836, Abilene was established as the first permanent settlement in what is now Texas. The site that would become Abilene was purchased by General Antonio López de Santa Anna from the Comanche nation and named after him. Santa Anna's campaign against Mexican insurgents in 1835-1836 resulted in the rout of these rebels, and López de Santa Anna decided to establish a new capital on the site. He chose Abilene because it had been a center of trade with Mexico for centuries and its location offered easy access to water supplies. The town's growth during the first years of its existence was slow due to lack of transportation and resources. However, by 1840, Abilene had developed into an important regional center with a population of around 2,000 people. Trade vied with military conflicts for attention among Texans at this time;Abilenes merchants expanded their operations thanks to new connections made through travel abroad. During the Mexican War (1846-1848), Abilene saw some significant development: In 1847, it became one of only two American cities to ratify the United States Constitution; in 1850, it became home to the Texas State Capitol; and in 1851-1852, it hosted a series of international exhibitions featuring native Texan artists alongside European painters from France and England. After Mexican independence was declared in 1821 by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (the father of modern Texas), most Texans did not support his government until they felt betrayed when he ceded what they considered divine rights over Mexico land to Juárez's forces on February 14, 1827. This event led many Texans who lived along Hudspeth Bayou east of San Antonio to take up arms against Lopez de Santa Anna's regime; these militias were known as "Texan Rangers." After monthslong fighting that left more than two hundred men dead or captured (and which exposed Abdlelene's unpreparedness for such warfare), Lopez deSantaAnna withdrew his forces southward towards Nacogdoches while Juárez consolidated his control over much of central Mexico City under his command. In early November 1850, Rio Grande Army general José Joaquín del Norte arrived at Fort Sam Houston with orders to capture or kill Governor Josiah Gregg if he refused compliance with Del Norte's demands for troops stationed east of San Antonio instead thereof—a move that came as no surprise given Greggs previous history regarding border disputes between Austin and Nacogdoches Territory (the southern tipof present dayDonnell County). On November 24th Captain James Barrentine wrote Gregg asking if he could cross Rio Grande River into Nacogdoches Territory so that reinforcements could be brought westward “to put down this insurrection” but received no response from Greggs office until December 10th when someone sent him an unsigned letter containing news about Lieutenant Colonel William Houstons death minutes earlier at Battle Creek Bridge outside Monterrey near Presidio Hills within Indian territory claimed by both Texas & Mexico [1]. When news reached President Pierce about Houstons death he ordered Admiral David Dixon Porter’s expedition northward acrossSabine Pass[2] whereupon Commodore John Cushing relieved Pearce from command at Corpus Christi Bay Buckner river mouth on January 5th 1861 after Commodore John Rodgers discovered Porters planAngered Gustavus Vasa Adams mob threw stones through door windows leading up stairs next doorABILENE PUBLIC LIBRARY
The first permanent settlers in what is now Abilene, Texas were the Fannin brothers. They arrived in 1836 and founded the town of Fort Worth on the Brazos River. The town was renamed Abilene in 1839 after General James H. Abilene, a veteran of the Mexican-American War and one of the first U.S. army officers to arrive in Texas.
