The United States Army Garrison Abilene, Texas was founded on November 16, 1849 at the Presidio of Fort Worth by General James Fenton. The fort served as a garrison for the area until it was transferred to Abilene on May 12, 1852. The United States Army Department of War authorized the construction of barracks and a military hospital in Abilene on October 14, 1850. The first soldiers to arrive in town were part of Company D, 1st Cavalry Regiment under Colonel Edward C. Smith.On July 4, 1861 the Confederate forces attacked Fort Worth and murdered Major General James Hogg with his entire command including General Phillip Sheridan In 1865 the Union army overran southern Texas and burned all bridges connectingAbilene with Mexico City which caused extensive damage to trade within that region
Abilene, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of McAllen County. The population was 2,643 at the 2010 census. The Abilene-McAllen Combined Statistical Area has a population of 9,501,inous (2011).[1] The history of Abilene dates back to 1836 when Captain James Bowie founded the town of Bowie on an east-west highway that would later become Interstate 20. In 1859, John Witherspoon organized a transportation company to build a toll road from Austin to San Antonio which became known as the Gila River Road. In 1881, General John A. Logan founded Fort Worth and named it after his friend and mentor, Lt.-Governor William Haddad.[2] Logan also donated land for what would become downtown Abilene. In 1902, Lamar University was founded in Abilene by Drs. John Clementson and James Buchanan Marshall,[3][4] two prominent physicians who had fled Monterrey during Mexican revolution.[5][6] In 1907, General Lewis Minton established Fort Worth Municipal Airport west of downtown[7][8]. On November 15th 1905 Union Pacific Railway opened its first transcontinental line from Laramie to Dallas–Fort Worth via Amarillo through central Texas with stops at Abilene and Wichita Falls[9]. The railroad led to economic development in central Texas due to its connections with eastern markets such as New York City and Chicago[10]. By 1912, there were over 100 businesses located in downtown Abilene with 5500 residents[11], making it one of the largest cities in Texas at that time. The growth of industry caused social changes as well; many immigrants came here during this era seeking opportunity while others faced challenges such as racism which still exists today[12].

The United States entered into war on December 8th 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. By 1942, over 100 countries had joined the war effort including Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who formed a Combined Expeditionary Force (CEF). This force fought through North Africa before being sent to Europe where they participated in Battle of Normandy on June 6th 1944. After completing their mission they returned home on July 14th 1945
