The history of the Abilene Army National Guard began in 1881 when several hundred men from the town of Abilene enlisted to serve in the Texas Rangers. The Rangers were disbanded after only a few years, but the soldiers who remained decided to form their own militia. In 1883, a military board was created to organize and manage this militia. The first captain of the Abilene Militia was John Smedley. In 1886, Captain Smedley organized an artillery company and renamed it the 1st Texas Mounted Infantry Regiment. This regiment served in various wars until 1899 when it was mustered out of service and merged with other militias into theTexas National Guard. In 1907, Captain Smedley organized another artillery company and named itthe 2nd Texas Mounted Infantry Regiment. This regiment served in World War I before being Mustered Out of Service in 1919 and merging with other militias into theNational Guard again. In 1935,Captain Smedley reorganized his unit once again asthe 3rd Texas Mounted Infantry Regiment which served during World War II before beingMustered Out of Service in 1946 and merging with other militias intothe National Guard once again. In recent years however growth has slowed noticeably as energy production has declined while job opportunities have diminished – although some large companies remain headquartered in town despite having operations outside of Abilene proper; many smaller businesses have closed or relocated within the past ten years making Abilene one of America’s “small towns” for economic reasons rather than because its residents offer special expertise or unique talents that make them attractive occupiers elsewhere.
