The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History in Abilene, Texas began with the deployment of the 351st Bomb Wing in 1951. The wing was stationed at Kelly Field, Texas and became known as "The Big Red One". In 1957, the wing relocated to Beech Grove Army Airfield, Illinois and became known as the 351st Bomb Wing (Heavy). Between 1958 and 1961, the wing deployed four times to RAF Fairford in England for bombing exercises. In 1963, the 331st Bomb Squadron was activated at Kelly Field and redesignated as The 363rd Bomb Wing. The wing flew Boeing B-47 Stratojet aircraft until retirement in 1991. Since its activation there have been three deployments:1992-1994;1999-2002;2005-2009. All three deployments were combined into one tour due to changing wings assignments within the USAF at that time. From 1994 to 1998,the unit also served concurrently with newly activated Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 221 (VMFA 221) which operated Northrop F-5E Tiger IIs from MCAS Miramar AFB CA during exercises Golden Globe I & IIalongside other members of 9th FW/3d Marines........... For many years it has been a tradition for members of the United States Air Force Reserve Forces stationed in or near Abilene to contribute air force themed gifts during Christmas season.
