In 1865, the Confederate States of America surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The Union took control of Tennessee and created the federal government of Tennessee. In 1889, President Grover Cleveland issued a proclamation designating Christmas as the "National Holiday" in honor of Tennesseans' support for his administration during the campaign against Andrew Johnson's presidency. On December 5th, 1893, President Grover Cleveland designated January 6th as "Marine Day" in commemoration of Tennesseans who had served in naval service during World War 1. In 1934, Franklin D. Roosevelt established Saturday morning Blitzkrieg as the national holiday to commemorate American servicemen who had died in World War 2. On December 8th, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and quickly conquered much of Asia and Oceania. The United States joined forces with Great Britain and France to fight Japan and eventually lost the war. Marine Day was re-established as a national holiday on February 22nd, 1945.
