The White House in Tennessee was built by James K. Polk in 1885 as his presidential mansion. The president's official residence is located on the north side of the Capitol Grounds, across from the Statehouse. The original White House complex consisted of a two-story barn on the west side of Capitol Grounds, an office building on top of that, and a small annex on the east side which was used for storage until 1904 when it became known as the Executive Mansion Annex. The annex was damaged by fire in 1917 and never regained its former glory; however, it still stands today as one of Nashville's most notable landmarks. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln made what is considered to be possibly America's first political speech at Knoxville's Municipal Hall;[1] he also delivered a sermon there in 1868.[2] In 1886, Franklin D. Roosevelt moved into his private home north of Knoxville while he attended Vanderbilt University;[3] he later moved into what is now known as the White House East Room adjacent to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's suite within the Executive Mansion Annex during World War II (1939-1945). Since 2000, all presidents have resided at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW during their term IN addition to traveling frequently to other parts of America via Air Force One or their personal Boeing 747s/Airport Runways 1-4 with state dinners/private receptions where they are usually received by Governors/Premiers from particular states before departing for more important sites around America including visits to military academies (at West Point & Annapolis) meetings with business leaders (especially technology companies) trip abroad such as NATO summits etc...
