The first white American president, George Washington, resided at the house from 1789 to 1797. The current White House was built in 1800 by James K. Polk, who served as U.S. President from 1851 to 1853 and again from 1904 to 1908. It replaced an earlier presidential mansion, the Brick House, which had been constructed on the same site in 1799-1800 by John Adams and his wife Martha Washington. Tennessee became part of the United States after the Battle of Monmouth (1777), during which General Robert E., Count Greene's army defeated British forces under General Howe at Monmouth Court House near Newport News on October 3, 1777. When Jefferson was elected president in 1800 he vacated Monticello for Tennessee due to his health problems and moved into what is now called the Executive Mansion on May 4th of that year. In office, Jefferson worked hard on behalf of new western settlers such as Andrew Jackson and helped promote agricultural development in what is now known as Knoxville; however some historians have argued that it may have been more important for him to reside outside of Washington D.C., where partisan politics would play a greater role than elsewhere within the country at this time. In 1851 Polk succeeded James K.—the only other person ever to serve two terms as Ulysses S.—and began construction on what would become known as The White House Complex—a 1,600-acre (608-hectare) swampy tract located near Nashville between Livingston Road and Cumberland Avenue just east of downtown—in order "to better appreciate our situation." Construction continued until February 9th, 1855 when Polk resigned because of an illness that caused hemiplegia but left behind a legacy including "a magnificent example both inside and out"of Presidential architecture which has since been replicated by subsequent presidents both Democrat and Republican alike; today modern day visitors can enter through one door or drive around four walls made entirely out of glass so they can see everything inside while living upstairs with their pets! After serving three terms as Vice President under Pierce Arrowsmith (1881-1885), Grover Cleveland served two terms before being elected 44th president in 1888 following party landslides throughout much of America due largely to burgeoning corruption scandals connected with railroad investment schemes; during his term various new buildings were constructed such as Fourteenth Street Station—now home to First National Bank—and State Capitol Park Annex which still stands today despite having undergone several renovations over time including adding a golf course, spa pool & tennis court among others; while Cleveland is most often associated with diminished economic fortunes resulting from Taft's 20% tariff hike campaign against him during his final term (1909–1913), some historians argue that Cleveland also presided over large infrastructure projects such as New York's Penn Station project (opened December 15th 1893) – one of North America's earliest subway systems – linking Manhattan with Brooklyn/Queens County through tunnels beneath Queensbridge Park obstructionism notwithstanding amidst heavy criticism levied against him by Tammany Hall politicians prior thereto culminating in impeachment proceedings brought about by then Speaker Nicholas Biddle – who himself would go onto become governor general Of New York City under Franklin D Roosevelt later in life
