Union City is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The town of Union City was founded in 1814 as a post office on the Cumberland River by John Sweeny and others. In 1822, it became the first town in Hardin County to be chartered as an incorporated municipality. The first mayor of Union City was James Hargrave. In 1861, Confederate General Andrew Johnson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Union City after being ordered by Ulysses S. Grant to do so following an altercation at the Battle of Pea Ridge (March 1862). Johnson lived there for two years before moving back to Nashville. In 1865, Union City became capital of Hardin County when all but one county seat were added to that county during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The cotton gin and other early industrial development in Union City are credited with helping to create the region's strong economy and culture. The first organized settlement in what would become Union City was made up of three families who arrived from Illinois on November 12, 1813. A post office was established in Union City on November 26, 1814, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 15, 1865. On December 20, 1815, James Fenton patented a land grant that included what would become Union City. In 1835, John Waddell built the first store in Union City; it became known as The Waddell Store. In 1840–41 he built two more stores – one called Waddell & Boggs and the other called Hartsfield & Coates – before moving his business to Shelbyville. By 1850 there were twelve businesses operating withinUnionCity limits alone. In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned down The Waddell Store after learning that its owner supported the North during the Civil War; however their destruction did not deter local merchants from continuing to do business with Confederate forces or people. In 1865 when Reconstruction ended following America's Civil War., Union City had a total population of just 158 people because all blackians had been deported south upon victory over slavery in 1865-1868; nevertheless many blacksmiths continued to operate out of homes near downtown buildings until about 1880 when they moved into new shops constructed north of town center along State Road 146B which became known as "Old Main Street". During this time most businesses withinUnionCity boundaries were closed by orders of Mayor John Sitton due to political embarrassment over discrimination against black residents (most notably against hiring blacks). In 1839, Union City became the first town in Tennessee to be chartered as an incorporated municipality. The city was named for the union of the two major Creek Indian tribes in what is now Alabama. The town quickly developed into one of the most important hubs of trade and commerce on the Cumberland Plateau. In 1853, Union City became the capital of Tennessee after Nashville was designated as its state capital. The city served as both political and cultural center for much ofTennessee's early history.
