The Union City Navy Yard was founded in 1881 as the first naval shipyard in the United States. The yard became a major center for naval construction, and it produced over 100 warships during its existence. During World War II, the navy built 5 submarines at the yard. The submarine USS P-38 was one of the few American ships to participate in World War II and be destroyed by the Axis powers. In 1971, the navy merged with other federal departments to form Defense Department bureaucracy. Union City is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 14,724 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Hardin County and the eighth-largest city east of Memphis. The area that makes up Union City was laid out as a town by settlers from Georgia in 1812. A post office called Union City was established in 1835, and since then it has been one of the larger cities in Hardin County. The first settler to come to what would become Union City was Andrew Williamson, who arrived on July 4, 1812. He named his new settlement after General James K. Polk, who had won an important battle against Spanish forces near Mobile Bay on May 25 of that year. Several months later Williamson sold his land to John Gadsden for $2 per acre (about $110 peracre today). Gadsden had been born in Scotland and came to America in 1784 as a slave trader with his brother Hugh Gadsden. He became one of the largest slaveholders in Tennessee before he died in 1850. The first store opened at what is now known as Main Street on October 6, 1835; it was run by Wm Henson and Geo Folsom who also operated a sawmill and gristmill there until 1865 when they moved to nearby Decaturville for similar operations combined with their own stores which were all destroyed by fire two years later during Reconstruction efforts within Confederate hands due to lack of government support throughout much of the Southwestern United States following its collapse after the American Civil War ended six years earlier In 1865 Folsom reopened his store at 314 Main Street where he remains today as an active proprietor still operating under that name though son George recently retired from business operations there having purchased it from father paul back home about 1975 . Union City proper developed only slowly thereafter due mainly to jurisdictional differences between Hardin County (west) and Knox County (east) both located on opposite banks of river frontage along river's north/south axis making for difficult transportation access without major extensions or additions much like many towns situated along same rivers across south central US during this time period prior thereto including such places as Decaturville, Florence, Greeneville etc.. This situation persisted until well into 20th century when various internal combustion engine based industrial development centered around Chattanooga began quickly displacing traditional horse powered farming activities prevalent throughout much of Appalachia resulting ultimately in dramatic rural loss while downtown Chattanooga grew rapidly becoming one of most vibrant large metropolitan areas east of Memphis characterized today primarily by high quality professional & business districts rather than heavy reliance upon agricultural production typical patterns prevailing longitudinally acrosssouthcentralus prior thereto including such places as Clarksburg/Easley/ squirrel Hill etc..
Union City was founded in 1821 by General John C. Fremont and his men as a stop on the road from Knoxville to Chattanooga. The town quickly became a center for agriculture and industry, and its residents were known for their Temperance Movement activism. In 1865, Union City was attacked by Confederate forces during the Battle of Union City, which resulted in the loss of many lives. The town continued to decline until it was abandoned in the 1940s. Today, only a few remains of Union City remain, including a small museum adjacent to the courthouse.
