Coffee has been a part of the Union City, Tennessee community for more than 150 years. The first coffeehouses in Union City were built in 1876 by two Italian immigrants, Pietro and Spiro Anzalone. Pietro ran the business until his death in 1925. In 1865, John Stephenson opened the first store in Union City. He was followed by others who opened stores throughout the city over the next decade. By 1875, there were 11 businesses operating in Union City. The first Starbucks coffee shop opened on West End Avenue near downtown in 1992. The store became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town and soon attracted national attention. Union City, Tennessee is a city in the Appalachian Mountains of western Tennessee. It was founded in 1867 by freedmen and their families who had been driven from their homes in the Southern states during the American Civil War. The population was 17,137 at the 2000 census. Union City is located on the Cumberland River about 25 miles (40 km) west of Nashville and 15 miles (24 km) north of Clarksville. The town began as a small settlement on the banks of the Cumberland River. By 1871, it had become an important stop for wagon trains carrying goods to and from Chattanooga, Tennesee. In 1881, Union City became an incorporated municipality when its residents voted to join the state of Tennessee.
