The town was founded in 1813 by General Andrew Jackson as a military post on what is now known as Indian Hill Road. It became an important center for goods transportation throughout much of western Tennessee during the 19th century. In 1881, Tullahoma was incorporated as a city and soon became one of the most significant cities in eastern Tennessee. In 1984, Tullahoma was designated as a National Historical Landmark. Today, Tullahoma retains its strong agricultural base and importance within eastern Tennessee economy. The town also features several large shopping malls which attract many tourists each year.

Tullahoma was founded on November 3, 1779 by General James Robertson. The town was named after the Tullahoma mountain range near which it was located. It is said that early settlers were farmers and traders who started trading with the Cherokee Nation. In 1805, Tullahoma became a county seat of Maury County. From 1810 to 1830, Tullahoma was also the capital of Tennessee. The first courthouse in Tullahoma was built in 1810 and later replaced by the current building. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Tullahoma sided with the Confederate States of America and unsuccessfully fought against Union forces. On February 26, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant burned down part of the town as part of his punitive campaign against Confederate sympathizers in Tennessee. The population of Tullahoma declined from its peak in 1870 to about 575 by 1920 due to technological advances and other factors such as economic decline among Tennesseans west of Memphis. However, there has been a recent resurgence in interest in genealogy and history throughout Greater Chattanooga since 2000 when a new museum opened dedicated to local history called "Pioneers Village." Today, downtown Tullahomas remains an important commercial center for service industry businesses while also providing opportunities for cultural experiences including events like art shows and festivals springing up around every year that attract many tourists from all over the region
