Tullahoma is a city in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 21,551 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sevier County. Tullahoma was founded by order of General Andrew Jackson in 1819 as a Cherokee Nation village on the Hiwassee River. The town was named for General John Cramer's old home near present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1830, Tullahoma became part of the newly formed Tennessee Territory and was renamed Legion City after its founder Colonel James A. Legion. On February 12, 1857, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Braxton Bragg defeated Union forces at Battle of Rightsdale outside Tullahoma and this event is commemorated with a local festival each year called "Bragg Day." In 1860–61 when NashvilleBecameTennessee'sSecondCity (after Louisville),Tullahoma annexed much of what are now Lowndes County to form new Municipal Districts 1&2A (what are now Metro Nashville). Tullahoma, Tennessee was founded in 1815 by James Robertson and his brother John. It became a town in 1833, and then a city in 1907. The population of Tullahoma peaked at over 100,000 in 1920, but has since declined to around 50,000 today. The first settlement at Tullahoma was a small cabin built by James Robertson on the banks of the Cumberland River. In 1815, the area that now includes Tullahoma was part of the Cherokee Nation and its ruler, Sequoyah believed that white men were devils who could not be trusted. In retaliation for this belief, Sequoyah ordered his subjects to burn down all buildings within three miles of his village so that no white man would ever set foot there again. This order led to the establishment of Tullahoma as a town on December 12th of that year. The first post office at Tullahoma was opened on February 14th of 1833 by J.W. Rutherford with mail service from Nashville. By 1840, however, it had been renamed Johnson City after President Andrew Johnson’s son-in-law and Johnson County seat (now Memphis). After Jackson’s victory in the presidential election of November 8th,1848, Congress passed an act authorizing Jackson to move the seat from Nashville to Montgomery County ostensibly because it had become too difficult for him to travel there regularly due to political unrest throughout much of Alabama and Tennessee following his victory over Andrew Johnson in that election campaign. Unfortunately forJackson&#Array; he did not follow through with this plan and moved instead to Montgomery County where he soon died after being poisoned while attending a dinner given by Drury Lane Theater owner Samuel Morse Sr., one of Jackson’s opponents during his bid for president against Vice President Harrison! It is interesting to note that although Montgomery County eventually becameAlabama’s most populous county with over 155 million residents as compared to Tennessee’s only Over 150 thousand residents –Tullahoma retained its status as an early center for cotton production long after other parts of Alabama &#Array; such as Birmingham &#Array; had become industrialized beyond what Rural America could support financially or politically anymore. One reason why Tullahoma continued to prosper despite becoming more urbanized may have been due its location near two major rivers –the Cumberland River which drawn many indentured servants southward during the 1830s search for new land grants)and Great Zandalee Creek which provided water power necessary for large cotton plantations until about 1880 when those plantations were replaced by electric lights!
