The Tennessee Navy has been a part of the state’s culture for more than 150 years. The navy is responsible for providing maritime services to the state and its citizens, and it has played an important role in Tennessee’s history. In 1814, the first ship to be launched from Knoxville was the USS Tullahoma. The Tullahoma was used as a transport vessel for goods between Knoxville and Nashville. In 1825, the USS Monitor became the first ship to sail into what is now Chattanooga Harbor. This event marked an important milestone in naval history because it demonstrated that warships could be brought into town to serve as dockside cargo vessels. The navy also played a significant role in creating Tennessee’s economy during World War II. The town is named after the Tullahoma Lake watershed and was founded in 1872 by white settlers as a community on an Indian reservation. The growth of Tullahoma during the 20th century was due to its location as an important transportation hub on US 127, as well as its status as a center for education and industry. Tullahoma, Tennessee was founded in 1795 by Captain James Robertson. The town was named for the Shawnee word "tlaloka" meaning "place of peace." The first store in Tullahoma was built on what is now Main Street. In 1812, a mill was built and began to produce flour for local consumption. A post office called Tullahoma was established in 1824. By 1830, there were three stores and two banks in the town. The population of Tullahoma had increased to around 500 by 1840. In 1850, the United States Mint opened an operations at Tullahoma and began minting coins there from then on. By 1860, there were 12 businesses in the town with a total payroll of $10,000. The town experienced some growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as residents moved into new homes or replaced older buildings that had been destroyed by fire or floods. However, it declined after World War II due to its lack of industry or population growth opportunities; accordingly, it has only regained attention since 2000 as part of efforts to revive downtown Tullahoma taken jointly by city officials and business owners
