Tennessee is a state in the southeastern United States. The capital and largest city is Nashville. Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 23rd state on July 17, 1859. Its name comes from the Cherokee word Tulla-homa, meaning "house of cotton." The area that now makes up Tennessee was first inhabited by Native Americans. The Cherokee Nation traded with Spanish traders and began expanding their territory in what is now Alabama in the early 17th century. In 1763, General James Wilkinson forced all the Cherokee out of North America for having aided Great Britain during the Seven Years' War. Spain soon became interested in gaining control of this land, so they sent a force under Colonel Antonio de la Garza to purchase it from Cherokees in 1768. This event is known as The Treaty of Tullahoma which ended hostilities between Spain and America. Tennessee officially became a state on July 17, 1859, when Congress approved an act admitting it into the Union as part of Kentucky and Virginia. On December 14th, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Knoxville to begin his 1863 raid on Ulysses S Grant's army at Chattanooga; he didn't find any military supplies or munitions worth raiding so quickly – instead he found cannons and stores belonging to American forces taken captive by Grant's army during its retreat from Atlanta two weeks earlier. Ewell burned most of Knoxville before retreating back across the Cumberland River eastward towards Chattanooga where he surrendered just days later after reaching safe haven within Union lines outside town limits in Decatur County near present day Murfreesboro., Tennessee

Tullahoma, Tennessee is a small town in McMinn County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Tullahoma has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and was founded in 1799 as Fort Ross on the banks of the Cumberland River by General Andrew Jackson's army during the War of 1812. The town was named after an Indian chief who had been killed near present-day Chattanooga. For many years it served as a military post and later became a cotton gin and market center. In 1865, Tullahoma became the first city in McMinn County when it was incorporated as a result of statehood proceedings following Reconstruction. The area that would become Tullahoma was long occupied by Native American tribes such as the Cherokees and Chickasaws. The region around present-day Tullahoma was first settled by settlers from Kentucky in 1799 after General Andrew Jackson's forces destroyed an Indian village along the Cumberland River south of Chattanooga. When construction began on Fort Ross on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1799, local Cherokee chiefs helped lead Captain John Sevier's crew to build what would become one of America's earliest military posts. At its peak at about 200 people, Fort Ross served as a garrison for several months per year with cannons and soldiers manning them until December 1800 when Lieutenant Colonel James Robertson replaced Sevier with his own force to help defend against French incursions into North Carolina during King George II's War (1805–1809). By 1801,Fort Ross had grown to include over 400 residents within wallsed confines manned by Company A militia under Major George Catlett which patrolled upstream against possible French incursions along both sides ofthe riverine divide between Knoxville and Chattanooga proper After revolution broke out in late 1804 culminating in President Thomas Jefferson being impeached, war clouds gathered throughout Europe which eventually led to Napoleon Bonaparte conquering most of Europe including France Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell besieged FortRoss early November 1805 but were repulsed due to superior numbers while Federal troops arrived just in time to evacuate all personnel before nightfall Following this victory over European enemies - rather than paying tribute or ceding land - Jefferson ordered Catlett's company disbanded effective 3/1/1806 effective also disbanding two other companies from Knoxville militias commanded respectively by Major Isaac Neely & Captain John Morehead In late fall 1806 Commodore James Buchanan sent Tasker Fenton upriver via Mobile Bayou with instructions to relocate all U S warships based westward at Mobile Dockyards so that they could be used more efficiently against Spanish vessels engaged off Cuba - only three American warships deployed off Havana were able to operate effectively due primarily to lack of fuel accomplished through blockade . Tullahoma (pop. 10,000 in 1860) was the first town in Tennessee to be founded by white Americans. The town's founder, James Robertson, and his family had been forced from their home on the Cumberland Plateau by the Cherokee Indian War of 1811-12. They moved to what is now Tullahoma County in 1817 and started a flour mill. In 1830, they built a log cabin as their home. When the Xingyuan Expedition of 1837 discovered oil reserves in western Tennessee,Robertson decided to invest and began drilling for oil at nearby Spring Hill prospect site. The discovery led to increased business for the Robertson family and helped form Tullahoma into an important center of industry in eastern Tennessee during the antebellum period.
