In 1964-1965, NASTULLOOMA AIR FORCE BASE became home to three Marine detachments: one for Personnel assigned to Helicopter Squadron One hundredixty Seven (HON 161) and two for helicopter squadron Two hundred Fifty Four (HON 244). These detachments participated in various exercises including Tactical Airlift Command’s “Hotline Bling” exercise in 1966 and 1968; Northern Europe's “ multinational airborne exercise” in 1969; "Vietnam Cruise '68" cruise missile exercise with United States Navy vessels conducted off North Vietnam; and Exercise Southeast Asia Patrol Wing CAPEX '69'. Some famous residents include Neil Armstrong (né Armstrong; born December 20, 1941), Billy Graham (born October 14, 1915), Don Meredith (born November 12, 1933) and Loretta Lynn (born February 15th 1943). Tullahoma, Tennessee is a small town located in the valley of the Cumberland Mountains, about thirty-six miles south of Memphis. It has a population of only around 1,000 people today and was founded by Cherokee Indians in the early 1800s. The town began to grow as an agricultural community during the 19th century, but it reached its peak during World War II when it became one of the principal sources of supply for the Army's munitions factory at nearby Memphis. In recent years, Tullahoma has been experiencing significant growth as an tourist destination thanks to its historic sites and attractions.
In 1793, Tullahoma was founded as a trading post on the Tennessee River by Captain John Sevier and his men. The town was named after the Tahoka people, who lived in that area. In 1814, Tullahoma became an official town of the United States. By 1830, it had a population of 1,500. In 1831, the Cherokee Removal Act removed all Cherokee from Alabama and Georgia to what is now southeastern Oklahoma. Tullahoma was one of the several towns in Alabama affected by this event. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces at Fort Donelson in Tennessee. Tullahoma was among those killed or wounded in the battle. On January 8, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Braxton Bragg marched through Tullahoma on his way to Louisville to join Confederate forces there against opponent Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army near that city. At least 10 species of birds have been found at sites near present-day Tullahoma along with artifacts dating back to 4100 BC including pottery and stone tools used by Native Americans
