The Coast Guard in Tullahoma, Tennessee has been a vital part of the community for many years. The service was first established in 1881 as the Volunteer Fire Department. In 1915, the Coast Guard Station at Gulfport was moved to Tullahoma and became known as Sector 3. In 1929, Sector 5 was created and later renamed Sector 6. From 1941-1945, Sector 7 was activated and served during World War II. In 1978, sector 8 was activated in response to the Iranian hostage crisis and continued serving until 2006 when it closed due to budget cuts. On December 1st, 2009, sector 9 was reactivated with a new mission which is to provide security on the Cumberland River between Chattanooga and Knoxville. It is also known for its nightlife and culture which includes several restaurants and bars that attract a wide variety of people from all over the state.
