In 1984, Bob's Big Boy became the first fast food restaurant in Tullahoma when it opened on University Boulevard. It operated until 1990 when it closed due to lack of patronage. In 2003, Pizza Hut Open Air opened on University Boulevard and continues to serve as an anchor tenant today. In 2006, Starbucks began operations in Tullahoma with its initial location along University Boulevard at Old Hickory Road. The town of Tullahoma, Tennessee was founded in 1827 by the Jackson family. The town was named for John C. Tullahoma, a Senator from Georgia who had served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that ratified the United States Constitution. The Jackson family continued to live in the town until it burned down in 1871. Tullahoma became an important center of cotton production during the early years of the 20th century. Cotton farming gave rise to many businesses and homes in Tullahoma, along with retail and agricultural services. By 1930, however, cotton production had decreased and most residents were employed within local industries or with government jobs. During World War II, Tullahoma played a significant role in manufacturing munitions and other military items used by the United States Military. Many commercial businesses closed during this time, but some managed to stay open through various expansions and new acquisitions. In recent decades, portions of downtown have been revitalized as a result of low-cost housing development nearby.
Tullahoma was founded by the Cherokee in 1796. The town was named for Tullahoma Lake, which was located in what is now northeast Alabama. In 1814, Tullahoma became a county seat of Marshall County and later added to Montgomery County. In 1827, it became part of Knoxville County. The post office at Tullahoma closed on September 15, 1951.
