Springfield who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as U.S. Minister to Mexico City under President Polk. However, since 2000 Springfield has had an increase in business due to its location on I-65 just south of Knoxville making it easily accessible by both people and businesses alike. In addition to its namesake general who fought during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), other notable residents of Springfield over time have included Congressman John Crain (1912-1982), Drury Lane Theatre founder Harry Belafonte (1945-2009), Governor Bill Haslam (2006-2015) and musician Shelby Lynne Hall (b 1965). As one of only two towns in Hardin County with a post office that still remains operational, Springfield has been able to maintain some degree of stability despite changes within its community caused by economic downturns or natural disasters such as hurricanes Katrina or Sandy which destroyed homes, businesses and more importantly human life including many minor league baseball teams that were based there like the Greeneville Reds before they relocated to Chattanooga following Hurricane Ivan; however no major league team has ever moved into Springfield again after Katrina or Sandy even though plans are underway for a new ballpark which would be built on government land next to Burlington High School across I-65 from where both teams play today; this demonstrates how important it is for small towns like Springfield not only geographically but also economically when expansion money becomes available outside their town limits
