In the 1930s, Alfred Peet and his family took over the business and continued to grow it greatly. They even opened their own café in the 1970s that continues to serve delicious coffee today. The first post office was established near the intersection of Broadway and Spring Streets on December 20, 1819. The present day courthouse was built between 1870 and 1875 as part of a program to improve infrastructure in rural areas around Nashville while also honoring Native American Leaders such as Chief Joseph Custer who had fought against white settlers at Wounded Knee Creek battlefield fifty years earlier
