The history of the Springfield, Tennessee Army National Guard begins in 1861. The first unit to be organized in the town was Company A, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment Knoxville Volunteer Infantry. The company was mustered into service on September 17th and fought in the Civil War under General James W. Polk as part of the Confederate army. After the war, Company A disbanded but Company B (now Co H) continued to serve until 1875 when it was disbanded due to lack of members. I n 1876, a group of men from Company B decided to form a new company and name it The 1st Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Springfield Volunteer Infantry. This company served for three years with distinction before being re-organized on October 15th into a battalion under command of Major John Southerland. On December 8th, 1881 this battalion became part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team commanded by Brigadier General J.B.Branch during Reconstruction in Tennessee. In 1948 an all volunteer regiment was formed called The Mississippi National Guard at Springfield Armory and activated on November 4th following reconstruction in Mississippi which had ended two years earlier with passage of the Military Reconstruction Act of 1946 by Congress. This regiment served federally through 1957 when it was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters School District #7 under jurisdiction of Commander United States Army Garrison Memphis Missouri Commanding General First Corps Area Southwestern Illinois Militia commander Brigadier General Wade Hampton III who also resided at Springfield Armory where he also controlled training exercises for his brigade commanders and other military leaders visiting Memphis for rifle range practice or maneuvers each summer during 'the hot season'. In 1958 HQ&HSD #7 transitioned back over to State control effective July 1st when State Control was transferred from Commander United States Army Garrison Memphis Missouri to Commander United States Army Garrison Springfield Michigan which is now responsible for all statewide military activities includingArmy gunnery school operations located adjacent to armory complex; troop movement within garrison area; artillery fire support mission; state funded development & construction projects inside/outside armory complex including $1 million dollar project costing $2 million dollars that includes addition & renovation of existing barracks facilities along with acquisition/construction of two additional buildings known as “The Queen’s Chapel” those barracks were opened up & occupied by troops serving with Headquarters & Headquarters School District #9 Arkansas National Guard concurrent with their deployment home country side conducting joint drill rotations etc.. h e r ar y 9 th century: Captain Abel Meyers founded a small bandit gang named "The Illini" operating out Of what is nowSpringfield TN . They robbed settlers travelling through central Kentucky during traveling season . Springfield is a small town in the state of Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis–Presbyterian–St. Thomas metropolitan statistical area. Springfield is located in Shelby County on the southern edge of the metropolitan area and is bordered by Decatur to its east and west, Oak Ridge to its north, and Canonsburg to its south. The town was founded in 1814 as an outpost on a post road connecting Lexington, Kentucky with Nashville, Tennessee. In 1835 it became one of two counties in Wayne County when that county was created from parts of Knoxville and Bellville counties. The county seat changed from Lebanon to Springfield in 1859; however, it remained Lebanon until 1893 when it became one of three cities within the new Memphis–Peoriament metropolitan area (the other two being Murfreesboro and Germantown). The current city limits were set by an act passed by the Tennessee General Assembly on July 1st, 1907 which annexed what had been Lebanon Township into the new city limits. From 1861 until about 1925 much of what now makes up Springfield was part of Highland Heights which also included most of Decatur except for a small portion near West End which detached from Highland Heights approximately 1930-1940 due to landfill excavation - this land contents are now listed as part of downtownDecatur park under separate ownership but still visible as hills/mountains out back
