Springfield was founded in 1819 by General David Wilkinson, who named it after Springfield County, Illinois. The town started as a small settlement on the edge of what is now Memphis, Tennessee. It grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s because of its location at the junction of two major trade routes, the Cumberland Road and the Memphis & Charleston Railroad. In 1847, Springfield became a city and was renamed after Andrew Johnson, who served as President of the United States from 1865 to 1869.
