Many families lost their jobs or had to sell properties to pay for food rations. As a result,SpringHill experienced a rapid decline which culminated with its destruction by Hurricane Ivan in 1996. At its height, SpringHill had about 60 residentsand few if any amenities such as schools or churches. However, thanks to concerted efforts by locals and volunteers, traces of SpringHill remain today including an annual folk music festival and several heritage homes Museums are open year-round
