Spring Hill is a small town located in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1836 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Jane. The town originally consisted of only about forty residents. By the early 1860s, Spring Hill had grown to about two hundred people. It became an important center for cotton ginning and other textile production during the American Civil War. After the war, Spring Hill experienced a period of growth and prosperity that lasted until the early 20th century. During this time, the town developed a strong sense of community and civic pride. In addition, Spring Hill played an important role in developing the state of Tennessee as it exists today. The first inhabitants of SpringHill were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants along the banks of the Cumberland River. When European settlers arrived in what is now Johnson County in 1836, they found these same natives living among them in villages near present-day Chattanooga. One such settler was General James Wilkinson who arrived with his family from England in 1835. The Wilkinson family soon began to make significant contributions to this new community by donating land and establishing businesses such as a school and warehouse. The original name for SpringHill was Red Clay Creek village which was given to it by Captain James Robertson on account of its similarity to red clay found near Chattanooga (now known as Old Hickory). The first permanent white inhabitant of SpringHill was Mrs Jane Fenton who moved into the settlement from her home at Cherry Springs around December 1st, 1840 . Mrs Fenton's husbandColonel John Fenton had also come over from Scotland several months earlier as part of General Andrew Jackson's military forces fighting against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant throughout Tennessee . In spite of initial difficulties due to lack of transportation or opportunity, Colonel John Fenton quickly built up a successful business importing goods both local and abroad including some 500 wagonloads worthof cotton each year between 1840-1845 As springhill grew more established with its own schools (the first being openedauxiliary school January 1st 1847), churches (First Presbyterian March 26th 1848), post office(March 12th 1850), jail(December 23rd 1850) & others , many citizens took note & offered their services for various civic duties During Reconstruction eraSpringhill became onehalfway house representing all aspects northerners wanted clarification wit Gov'tmt concerning negroes
