In Spring Hill, Tennessee, the first African American to own a home in the town was Mrs. C.M. Key in 1892. The Key family had moved from Mobile, Alabama to Spring Hill after Reverend John Key founded the First Baptist Church there in 1885. Mrs. Key's father, Thomas Key, also owned a home in town and helped run the Post Office and School until his death in 1901. In 1896, Miss Anna May Hinton purchased a house near Main Street and became one of the few black women living independently in Spring Hill at that time. In 1916, when Mr. J.D.'s store closed down due to lack of business, Miss Hinton opened her own grocery store on High Street which she ran until her death in 1978.
