In 1868, a man named Fenton opened a small shop called The Coffee House on Main Street in Spring Hill. This store was the first commercial coffee house in Tennessee. Fenton sold his beans direct to consumers, which gave him a lot of control over the quality of his product. He also developed a reputation for being an expert brewer and for being able to produce high-quality coffee. Over time, other businesses started up around town that sold coffee. These businesses included The Coffee Shop on Market Street, Mr. B’s Bakery on First Avenue, and Mrs. Richardson's Cafe on Third Street. All of these businesses had different purposes – some served as stores, others served as places where customers could buy cupcakes or hot chocolate from time to time, and still others produced their own beans and provided service exclusively within their own establishments (i.e., no outside merchants allowed). In 1936, Johnnie Shively founded J&J Coffee Roasters in Spring Hill. J&J was the first artisanal roaster in Tennessee and continues to be one of the most popular brands today! J&J roasted all of its beans himself – including all those used by Starbucks! J&J is known for its unique flavor profile which includes dark roasts with lots of acidity; light roasts with fruity flavors;and specialty blends designed specifically for each customer’s needs (e.g., Kahlua Latte!).
