The community was founded in 1873 by James Soddy and his wife Martha Smith as a stopping place on their way to work in the local mines. The name comes from "Soddy Daisy" which is an unincorporated community located near Owensboro, Kentucky. In 1901, Soddy Daisy had a post office and general store with a population of just four people. By 1920, there were only twelve residents living in Soddy Daisy and it had lost its significance as an agricultural center due to the decline of coal mining in Tennessee. However, over time Soddy Daisy has come back to life as a small town that emphasis agriculture and local businesses such as grocery stores and printing shops. There are also several churches within the community which continue to play an important role in its social life. Despite this history however, Soddy Daisy remains much like it was when James Soddy first settled there more than seventy years ago; A small but tight-knit community where everyone knows each other pretty well and importance is placed on family values

Soddy Daisy is a small town located in McMinn County, Tennessee. The name comes from the Old English word "sod" meaning to plant and "daisy" meaning a type of lily. The first settler in Soddy Daisy was John Soddy, who arrived in 1814. In 1819, James Soddy and his brother John founded the town on land donated by James's father-in-law, David Wade. The original school was built in 1822 and was named for Reverend Samuel Dickson, an early Methodist minister who died in 1824. After Reverend Dickson's death, the school was renamed for his widow (Mary) Dickson. The first store in Soddy Daisy opened on Main Street in 1830. It continued to be open until it burned down in 1865. In 1892, the post office moved to Soddy Daisy from Mammoth Hot Springs which had been their original location since1862. The first barn in Soddy Daisy was built around 1840 and still stands today. It served as the primary means of transportation for settlers and locals until it burned down around 1870. The first doctor practicing medicine at SodderDaisy was Drs Daniel Burt and Levi Sheets from Knoxville after they married there in 1850 In 1865, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith established a military hospital called Highland Hospital here which became known as Kirby Smith Hospital after him Sodder Daisy has had many civic organizations over its history including the McDowell County Historical Society which is now headquartered at downtownSodkaDaisy;the Derrick Family Museum;the Presbyterian Church;and Lions Club International
