Soddy Daisy is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Soddy Daisy is known for its white picket fence homes and for its production of honeybees and beekeepers. The first settler in what would become Soddy Daisy was John Moseley who arrived in 1829. The community was named after William Sidney Soddy, an American colonel who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as a judge on the Tennessee Supreme Court. In 1865, James Ladd established a sawmill and millrace near present-day Soddy Daisy to power his new store which he called "Ladd's Hole." By 1870, there were more than 100 people living in Soddy Daisy with Congregational services being offered by Reverend Aiken. In 1887, John Dickson opened his gin distillery in nearby Bryantville which would become one of the largest distilleries in America for many years. Dickson also played a key role in developing country music with his song "Soddy Daisy" becoming well-known throughout these years. The population peaked at 2,715 during World War II when many Americans left to serve in war efforts; however it plunged following the war and only reached 1,564 by 1960 due to regional decline as manufacturing jobs moved out ofKnox County into other states such as Memphis or Alabama. However since then it has slowly trended upwards steadily reaching its current population of 1,936 according to2010 census results. In 1907, the name was changed to "Soddy Daisy" after a local creek located in the community. The Soddy Daisy post office closed in 1984, but the town remains completely rural with no commercial outlets. Soddy Daisy has been home to a wide variety of activities over its history- from agriculture to blacksmithing to fishing. During World War II, many Soddy Daisy residents served in the military as part of the V-12 program. After the war ended, many of these veterans returned home and started businesses in their old townsite. Today, Soddy Daisy is an economically inactive small town that continues to maintain some aspects of its pioneer culture- such as traditional farm life and horse racing events at nearby Memory Lane Race Course.
