By 1920, Smyrna had become one of the largest cities within Tennessee with a substantial coffee industry. The city also became home to one of the most important roasting facilities for Arabica beans within America – The James Hogg Company Roastery & manufactory located on Elm Street near downtown. Today, nearly all of Knoxville's Arabica beans are roasted at The James Hogg Company Roastery & manufactory – making it one of only a few places within Tennessee where this type of roast is available statewide (the other two locations are located in Nashville). The Smyrna Coffee House was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Brady and brothers John and Jonathan. The coffee house was built on Market Square, across from the old courthouse. It served as a meeting place for businessmen and farmers, as well as a stop for travelers on their way to Nashville. In 1830, the Brady's moved the coffee house to its current location on Main Street. The Smyrna Coffee House continued to serve coffee until Prohibition in 1933.

In 1802, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this township during their campaign against Native American forces in the Creek War, and Lieutenant Colonel John Fisk built his house here as headquarters for his Brigade of Volunteers under Major General James Hogg. After Reconstruction began in 1867, many white residents moved out of Knox County for economic reasons. Some black residents also left because they felt that they were not given an equal opportunity to participate in society or because they did not feel safe living near whites. As a result of these changes, Smyrna struggled economically until the late 1960s when it experienced a resurgence in its economy due to new development around Interstate 65 and other factors. In the early 1800s, beans from South America were brought over to Europe by sailors. These beans were ground into a very smooth drinkable powder which was used as a stimulant in war efforts. The first espresso machine was built in 1857 by Luigi Roba at Poggio Inferiore in Milan. This machine utilized water and ground coffee which was then boiled before it could be used to make espresso. The popularity of espresso soon shifted from Italy to other countries such as Spain, Germany, and Austria where machines began being built specifically for making this type of coffee. By 1870, all over Europe machines were being made that could produce high quality espresso based on a recipe provided by Angelo Moriondo (the founder of Italian Roastery). By World War II the demand for quality espresso had increased so much that various companies began manufacturing their own machines using whole bean or dry roasted beans instead of instant coffee. Today many people still enjoy great quality espresso based on recipes handed down through families or friends - something that started with simply grinding some good beans together!
