Smyrna, Tennessee is a small town in Jefferson County, Tennessee. The population was 3,944 at the 2010 census. Smyrna is located on the Cumberland River, about 15 miles northeast of Chattanooga and 25 miles southwest of Knoxville. The community was founded in 1831 by refugees from nearby Memphis. Smyrna was named for Nicholas Smyrna, a Greek missionary who had been sent to this area in 1819-20. At the time of its founding, Smyrna had only one store and two schools. By 1830, however, Smyrna had a post office and three churches – Baptist (1830), Methodist (1832), and Presbyterian (1834). In 1840, Mechanicsburg became the first town in Jefferson County to be chartered as an incorporated village. However, it ceased to exist when Smyrna joined the city Limits Commission formed by Jackson County in 1848. In 1850–51 the population of Smyrna increased to 12 residents when John Lennon settled there with his family after fleeing Liverpool during the English Civil War; he later moved to Cincinnati. The community's growth accelerated following annexation by Chattanooga in 1875; between 1880 and 1890 it added 10 more residences and 2 businesses including a flour mill and sawmill. In 1915 Smyrna annexed neighboring Rankin County which had also experienced rapid growth due to coal mining; that year its population reached 100 residents. However, within a few years Rankin County too had stopped growing as coal production ended and new industry began developing: agriculture became dominant over mining throughout much of what is now Jefferson County during this time period In 1900–01 Churchtown annexing neighbouring Union Township resulted in yet another increase in population: from 606 to 1123 people – an all-time high for any municipality within Jackson county save Rankin City which did not annex any other towns during this time frame Ashesboro annexed neighboring Decatur Township in 1903 but that annexation did not result in an increase since there were no significant changes within that township other than name change from Decatur Heights to Ashesboro shortly thereafter
