Shelbyville is a small town in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1871 by slaves and their descendants from Tennessee's largest slaveholding state of Alabama. The name "Shelbyville" comes from a nearby creek called Shelby Creek. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered his Cavalry to burn down all black churches in Mississippi during the Civil War because they considered them heathen places. This event is known as the " burning of the crosses". In 1871, a group of freedmen and their descendants from Tennessee's largest slaveholding state of Alabama founded Shelbyville as a temporary community on land that had been purchased by them from Forrest for $5 per acre (at that time worth about $). They named it after nearby creeks such as Shelby Creek and Cumberland Gap Creek because these waterways were thought to be ideal sites for an agricultural missionfield. The town became permanent in 1875 when it was moved from its original location on higher ground to lower ground where it would be less likely to be burned down by Confederate cavalry during theAmerican Civil War. The first white settlers arrived in Shelbyville in 1876, following the end of slavery there. They were mostly farmers who grew corn, hay, barley, oats and other vegetables; but some also opened small stores and built ovens and other domestic items out of wood or bricks brought over with goods bought at auctioneers' sales across the state line in Kentucky or distant Missouri. Shelbyville is an unincorporated community in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau, about 12 miles (19 km) south of Memphis and 18 miles (29 km) east of Nashville. The village was founded by General James Hogg in 1792 as a trading post on the Benton River. In 1802, it became a small town after being laid out by Solomon Stroud. In 1812, it became a county seat and remained so until 1830 when it was moved to Nashville. The first post office opened in Shelbyville on September 9, 1815. The present courthouse was built in 1898 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. The original town square was also built during this time. It is notable for its large number of antebellum homes which remain standing today including two Presidential residences – Andrew Johnson’s White House and John Fords Capitol Building – as well as many other historic buildings dating back to the 1800s such as courts house, jail, library and schoolhouse.

The first settler in Shelbyville was George Washington. In 1821, the population of Shelbyville reached 10,000. By 1850, the community had grown to over 15,000 people and it became a city in 1867. In 1918, World War I stopped production at the nearby A & P grocery store and caused an economic decline for the town. However, during World War II, local businesses produced materials for the war effort and helped to revive the economy.
