Shelbyville, Tennessee is a city in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,626 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shelby County. The name "Shelbyville" was derived from the Cherokee word "shi-lay-a" meaning "the Landing." The town post office was first established in 1811 and continued until 1865. In 1868 it became the county seat of Shelby County. The first known settler in what today is Shelbyville was James Dixon who arrived on horseback from Kentucky in 1784 and built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. He named his new settlement for his wife's birthplace -today's Chattanooga -but it was not until 1795 that he laid out a road to connect his land with other settlements around what are now Nashville and Louisville. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his Headquarters from Knoxville to within sight of Clarksville as part of his campaign against Butler's army during the War of 1812. When he reached this location on December 12th, he ordered Colonel John Sevier to take possession of all available buildings (largely artillery) which had been abandoned by Butler near Clarksville and move them into present day downtown Shelbyville where they were put into storage whileJackson directed Sevier to build Fort Donelson opposite Greeneville Creek appropriately named for himself – “Donelson’s Fort” –on November 20th following an engagement between Jackson’s forces and Butler near this creek bridge over which Union troops under Major General Gideon Welles attacked early on November 21st leading to severe losses for both sides resulting in about 2 thousand casualties including many killed or wounded officers and men). In the early 1800s, Shelbyville was a small town in eastern Tennessee. It was founded by Major General George Rogers Clark in 1799 and grew quickly because of its strategic location on the Cumberland River. The town became a post office in 1807 and an industrial center for cotton farming after it developed a system of canals to transport goods to markets. In the 1830s, Shelbyville began to grow into a large city with over 5,000 residents. The city became an important transportation hub for the region and played an important role inTennessee's statehood as a state in 1819. By 1850, Shelbyville had reached its peak population with over 20,000 residents and was considered one of the most prosperous cities in Tennessee. However, during the Civil War, Shelbyville becamea key battleground between Union forces and Confederate troops. In 1862, Union troops destroyed several bridges within the city limits before withdrawing from the area. After the war, Shelbyville declined rapidly as many factories closed down and poverty set in. However, due to initiatives like Mayor Millard Fillmore's "Clean Air Plan" which targeted pollution control in Knox County during this time period, Shelbyville has slowly regained some of its lost ground since then.
