Every year, Shelbyville celebrates its national guard with a holiday parade and/or event. The city's military history is intertwined with the holiday season, as various units of the Tennessee National Guard have served in various capacities within Shelbyville since the late 1800s. The earliest unit to serve in Shelbyville was the 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, which arrived from Kentucky on November 14, 1861. The regiment initially served as part of General James Hindman's Brigade in General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate army during the Civil War. In 1865, when Tennessee seceded from the Union, many of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment's members joined Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. Some soldiers who had remained in town after troops left for secession join local militia groups adjacent to downtown Shelbyville to help provide security for businesses and citizens during Reconstruction period. As time passed, more and more Tennessean Guardsmen answered calls to duty with their states' militaries throughout Southeast Asia and World War II. In 1946, when Tennessee became an adult state again, its territorial guards became known as the "National Guard." Since then, many different units ofTennessee National Guard have been called upon to respond to natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes. During Operation Neptune’s Spear that took place in 2011 across central Tennessee (particularly Memphis), detachments from both brigades converged at main Army barracks on Germantown Road in order to participate in combined operations that included air-assault assaults against positions near Greater Memphis International Airport.[1] Today there are over 4500 Tennessean Guardsmen serving our state through more than 160 deployments worldwide[2].

The National Guard was originally organized in 1792 as a militia to support trade and military engagements with Native American tribes. The Volunteers were first called the Mounted Regiment of Tennessee, but eventually became the Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This regiment served in various wars from 1812-1865, including the Mexican-American War, Indian Wars, and Reconstruction Era. In 1915, the Volunteer Infantry Regiment was redesignated as the Shelbyville National Guard Reserve Battalion (#4). The unit has remained inactive since then.
Shelbyville is a small town in the Tennessee Valley region of the United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis– Shelby County, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1827 on a tract of land that had been granted to James McMillan by General Andrew Jackson. The first post office was established in 1830, and it continued to be open until it closed in 1907. The first store opened in 1829, and the first school was built in 1830. In 1836, Shelbyville became one of six towns east of Knoxville that formed the new circuit court for Hardeman County. In 1853, Shelbyville incorporated as a city and remained an unincorporated village until 1957 when it became a city with its own police department and council members. The economy of Shelbyville is based primarily on agriculture; there are several large farms in the town. Some manufacturing also exists within the town: Ford makes products here (including automobiles), while JBL manufactures radios and other audio products here.
The United States National Guard has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The Continental Army's national guard was formed in 1775 as a militia to provide defense against British attacks. Over time, the Guards became more specialized and their mission changed from mere saving of society to protect our nation's borders and serve as an example of American democracy. Today, the U.S. National Guard provides soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen with essential equipment and training for both military operations and homeland security missions. In addition, the Guards provide support to federal law enforcement agencies across the country in apprehending criminals and promoting public safety. The Guards also play an important role in celebrating America's independence day by providing patriotic displays at various locations around our country. Despite its long history, there are some unique aspects about the national guard that set it apart from other paramilitary organizations such as the police or fire departments. For one, members of the national guard are not required to have a college degree; instead they receive basic training which gives them many skills relevant for adulthood including armed combat experience, first-response skills and disaster response planning. Additionally, members can join any number of unit types (e.g., infantry battalion/company/regiment), making it easy for them to respond quickly and effectively wherever needed within our Nation’s ever-changing landscape
The National Guard has been present in the United States since 1795. The first unit to be federally organized and activated was the 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 10, 1795. In 1812, the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment joined the National Guard as well. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive Order 9066 which called for all military forces in America to be mobilized for World War I. This order led to the creation of the National Guard Bureau and various branch units were formed including: artillery, cavalry, infantry and air defense units. In 1933, combat troops were sent to support Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal during the Great Depression. In 1945, servicemen from California surrendered at San Francisco after Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor. On September 11th of that year, almost two years later, soldiers from New York City surrendered at Times Square following a raid by NYPD officers into a secret Manhattan training camp run by al-Qaeda militants
Shelbyville is a town in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Murfreesboro–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in Shelbyville were veterans of the Union Army during the American Civil War who had come to help with the war effort and then return home. They built their log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1871. The town was named after General David Haney Shelby, an officer in the Union Army and general commanding a brigade of riflemen during the Battle of Chickamauga. The post office was established in 1872, and by 1886 it had become one of twelve towns within Robertson County. By 1900, there were over sixty businesses in Shelbyville including several stores and four banks. During World War II, Shelbyville played host to various military installations such as Camp Forrest which allowed for largescale manufacturing activity around Knoxville while also providing employment for many local residents. After World War II ended, much of what had been produced at Camp Forrest became unusable due to advances in technology and began being disposed of by management as waste instead of being used to produce new products. In 2001, Camp Forrest was sold to private individuals and has since been managed as a nature reserveFORMERLY called "Camp Forrest National Military Park". In 1966, Mayor Beattie dedicated Memorial Park which served as both a public park and residence for mayor & city council members until 1982 when they moved into City Hall annexing First Avenue North Suite 501. In 2007-2008 City Manager Jerry McMillin recommended that Shelbyville adopt a name change from "Robertson County" (the current name) to "Tennessee" due to its location within Tennessee's borders rather than within Kentucky or Virginia where most other settlements are located So on September 8th 2008 Town Meeting voted 7-1 against changing our name back again because we felt like it would be more confusing than anything else that we could think off! We’ve learned quite a bit about nicknames over these past few years though so I guess that’s something…..sorta ;)
The town of Shelbyville was founded in 1818 and named for General Andrew Jackson. The community grew rapidly due to the railroad construction that began in the early 1800s, and by the late 1870s it had become a major transportation center. In 1907, the city of Memphis annexed Shelbyville, making it an incorporated municipality. A new courthouse was built in 1912 and demolition began on what is now City Hall in 1914 to make way for a new library. The old courthouse was converted into a museum in 1951.
