Shelbyville is a small town in Union County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Murfreesboro–Butler metropolitan area. Shelbyville is located on the Cumberland River and has a rich history dating back to 1815 when it was known as "The Town of Shelby". The city was founded by Andrew Capps and named for General Ulysses S. Grant who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1865, General James Aiken moved his forces from Nashville to establish what became known as Aiken's Landing on the Cumberland River where he established Fort Donelson and began construction of Lookout Mountain Barracks which are now home to the University of Memphis. In 1870, John Sevier bought land east of town and built a sawmill that still exists today producing lumber used in many buildings throughout Shelbyville and surrounding areas including the University of Memphis (now known as Middle Tennessee State University). Sevier also donated land for a public school system which would serve all residents in what is now called Coventry Township. This system remains in place to this day with more than 100 schools within a radius of 10 miles from downtown Shelbyville.
