Shelbyville is a small town in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro metropolitan area. The town was founded by entrepreneur and surveyor James Fenton in 1810 as a small community on the edge of what is now Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1822, Fenton named his new settlement for himself and his wife Lucy after General Andrew Jackson's daughter-in-law (Lucy Walton). The name changed to Shelbyville in 1836 when John Sevier became its first mayor. In 1865, Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest crossed the Monongahela River and marched into Shelbyville to battle Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant near present day Goodlettsville. Forrest's men burned most of the town before withdrawing back across the river. Afterward, Forrest built a plantation here called "Hickory Bend". Although towns throughout eastern Tennessee were destroyed during World War II due to shelling by both sides (the bombing of Hendersonburg alone killed over 60 people), no similar wholesale destruction occurred in Shelbyville; only one building—an old grocery store—was damaged or destroyed completely during that conflict. The total number of buildings lost from all aspects of war-related damage was just two: an old schoolhouse and a garage used by local farmers during wartime for storage purposes; both structures were rebuilt post-war with prefabricated materials using techniques then still being developed commercially today. Today, much of downtown Shelbyville has been reconstructed following Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29th 2005; however many original businesses have not been reopened yet because insurance rates have increased since then especially for property located inside city limits which sustained significant storm damage such as roofs blown off storefronts and entire walls knocked down/ruined.) Shelbyville is a small city in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 589 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shelby County. The town was founded by General James Hogg in 1814 and became a village in 1838. It was renamed for Confederate general and statesman General Robert E. Lee in 1865. The first white person to settle in Shelbyville was Isaac McGee, who came from Georgia in 1796. He platted what would become Shelbyville on a hill above the present-day city center on November 15, 1814, after he and his brother convinced local Native American leaders to let them build their FortMcGee near where they now live. In 1816 McGee built an addition to the fort that served as the first courthouse in what would become Memphis; the building still stands today as part of First Baptist Church (now known as First Presbyterian). In 1838, General James Hogg moved his army headquarters from Knoxville to Shelbyville following his victory over Andrew Jackson's forces at Bridgeport Landing outside Chattanooga. He named the new settlement "Hoggstown" after himself but it reverted back to its original name two years later when he sold it to John Fenton for $1,000 (). Fenton developed it into a small town with about sixty residents by 1840 thanks to work done by him and others including Elijah Clarke (the father of future Congressman John A. Clark), David Humphreys (a surveyor), and George Stephenson (the builder of the Tennessee Railroad). The first store opened there on December 12, 1840, by schoolteacher Mrs Clements withtered money she had been given by her husband—a donation which has been counted as one of Shelbyvil
In the early 1800s, Shelbyville was a small town on the Cumberland River. It was home to a few settlers and their families until 1814, when the area became part of Tennessee. That year, General Andrew Jackson made it his headquarters during his campaigns in eastern Tennessee. In 1815, he founded what is now Memphis as a military post and named it for himself. When Tennessee became an Confederate state in 1861, Shelbyville remained in Union hands until February 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The Battle of Gettysburg happened nearby in July of that year and led to the death of over 50,000 Americans including more than 10% of Shelbyville’s population.
