The Army has been in Tennessee for over 200 years and the military has a significant presence in the state. The US Military First Infantry Regiment is the oldest infantry regiment in the US Army and was founded on December 12, 1784. The unit was originally stationed at Fort Donelson outside of Nashville. In 1815, the regiment moved to Cumberland Barracks on Broadway Street in downtown Nashville. In 1861, when Tennessee seceded from the Union, General Andrew Johnson ordered all army units to leave Tennessee and march north into Kentucky and Northern Virginia. One battalion of 1st Infantry Regiment left Chattanooga for Knoxville on November 25th but it was never seen again due to the war. The 1st Infantry Regiment returned to duty garrisoning Cumberland Barracks before disbanding on February 11th 1865. The 2nd Battalion (Tennessee) Infantry Regiment also served in Confederate service during the Civil War. On April 17th 1862 they were garrisoned at Corinth, Mississippi when Union forces captured that city after a three-day siege following a failed attempt by Confederate General Braxton Bragg to retake it from Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel John Custer. The 2nd Battalion (Tennessee) Infantry Regiment then fought at Chickamauga Creek where they participated in an engagement that resulted in one soldier being killed and five wounded including two officers accompanying him as part of his unit’s ceremonial guard role parade through town center prior to their battle against Federal forces entrenched along both banks of Bull Run River near Chattanooga.] In 1865, after Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House, all remaining US military troops were mustered out of Tennessee with only a few hundred men remaining unaccounted for due to wartime conscription laws which required all Tennesseans between 1820-1865 to serve 3 years within any branch of service or be drafted into service]. At this time there were about 12 battalions present scattered throughout almost every state across America]]. By 1870 there were just 8 battalions left active with 4 located in Tennessee]]. However, by 1902 there were 20 Battalions currently serving with 9 located permanently within our states]], making the Army one of our most important components [in terms of statewide support]].
