However, at this point Reconstruction began in Tennessee following Abraham Lincoln's successful Ulysses S. Grant victory in the Civil War In 1865, following Radical Reconstruction policies which sought to end slavery in America through social engineering measures such as white supremacy laws known as "The Kansas Bill", Confederate general Robert Ewell invaded Union territory near Chattanooga; this led to large-scale violence across northwestern America which eventually led to Ewell's capture two years later at Battle of Franklin Mountain
