When Red Bank, Tennessee was founded in 1802, it was one of the earliest settlements in what is now the United States. The town's founders were farmers who decided to move from Kentucky because of the harsh winters and expensive land. They named their new settlement after Sir John hostler, a Scottish explorer who had explored the area in 1795. The first policemen in Red Bank were hired by the townspeople themselves. Red Bank, Tennessee is a small town located in Rutherford County, Tennessee. The population of Red Bank was 2,530 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1879 by men from Chattanooga. The name "Red Bank" comes from the color of the River Raisin which flows through the town and contributes to its namesake. Red Bank is one of several towns that were founded along the Cumberland River in what is now Rutherford County. The river has been a major transportation artery for settlers and travelers since before European arrival. In 1795, Major James Robertson mapmarked a route between Nashville and Knoxville as part of his effort to take advantage of rich soil west of the mountains. The first permanent settler in Red Bank was John Sayer who arrived in 1801 with his family. He built a log cabin on Big Run Creek and named it Sayer's Station after himself and his brother-in-law Peter Sellers. By 1830, John Sayer had four children and began selling goods he had acquired along the river for transportation upriver to Knoxville or Murfreesboro. By 1840, he had 10 children and started spending winters in Chattanooga while his wife stayed behind to raise their children alone. In 1849, General Andrew Jackson appointed Jeptha Baker as commissioner general for Indian Affairs over lands east of Memphis including all present day Rutherford County except for parts of Greeneville, Tellico Hills, East Greeneville (now Tellico), Alexandria Park (now Arlington Heights), Whitesburg (now Sparta), Pilot Knob (now Clarksville) and many other settlements still within present day Williamson County Baker surveyed Red Bank platting out 4 square miles on May 9th 1850 with 60 buildings including 12 stores & 30 wagons/horses & 600 head of cattle on 640 acres[1] soon becoming one of the most important settlements along the Cumberland River Valley due to its central location within easy reach both by wagon trade routes from Chattanooga & Uniontown as well as access to water supplies via Big Run Creek which led down into Lebanon Valley During this time period there were no railroads connecting Nashville with Cumberland County so goods traveled either by boat or horseback across country until improvements were made during Reconstruction following Civil War Reddick's store catered directly to travelers along Big Run Creek; providing food items such as ammunition, saddles etc., clothing items such as hats, overalls etc., lodgings such as cribs & beds etc., information about local banks nearby including maps showing distances between different points
