The National Guard of Red Bank, Tennessee was organized on September 16, 1917. The unit was made up of citizens from throughout the state of Tennessee who volunteered to serve in their county’s defense. The first national guard unit was assigned to the Chattanooga Brigade and served until October 9, 1917. On July 16, 1918, the National Guard was ordered into battle against General John J. Pershing’s American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in World War I. After fighting through severe enemy fire and weather conditions for three days, the brigade arrived at a crossroads west of Ypres just before dark on July 18th. After making contact with other units and taking cover behind artillery pieces, the brigade advanced forward under heavy enemy fire until achieving its objective: reaching a German trenches east of Ypres where they relieved an Austrian battalion that had beenSeparated from their regiment by machinegun fire. Not long after arriving at the crossroads, elements of the brigade were detailed to help clear an area north of town which had become contested between French and British forces during World War I hostilities. When peace began to return in 1919 following World War I, many members ofthe unit decided it would be best if they all retired rather than continue serving in peacetime mode as part of Army Reserve units without pay or benefits……………………………………….. continued

Red Bank, Tennessee is a small town located in Union County, Tennessee. The population was 2,874 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Red Bank was founded by German immigrants in 1814. The first store in Red Bank was called the Germans' Store and it opened on Main Street. In 1824, J.H.Kempner started a cotton gin in Red Bank and soon there were several other businesses in the town. By 1830, Red Bank had a post office and two churches- one Presbyterian and one Methodist-. In 1836, state Senator John Tipton built the first school in Red Bank which served grades 1-8 until 1861 when it closed due to lack of funding. The second school was built on what is now Elm Street and served grades 9-12 from 1861 to 1865 when it also closed because of lack of funds. In 1870, another school was built on State Route 7 which served grades 1-8 until 1903 when it also closed due to lack of funding In 1881, construction began on what would become the present day courthouse square which included the original bank building that still stands today The town continued to grow during the 19th century with many new businesses being established including a barber shop, grocery store, bakery, laundry service and more During World War II (1939-1945), Red Bank played an important role as a military airfield providing refueling for Allied planes flying into battle In 1972, efforts began to create a new shopping center near downtown which became successful and continues to be used today After years of growth and development over time, aspects that have made RedBank unique include its wide variety of stores including clothing stores (including Sears), hardware stores (including Home Depot), restaurants (including Pizza Hut), automotive parts stores (including Midway) as well as numerous libraries/museums/galleries
