Red Bank, Tennessee is a city in and the county seat of Autauga County, Alabama. The population was 97,811 at the 2010 census. The town of Red Bank was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson as a trading post on the Tennessee River for Native Americans. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "red earth." In 1831, Jackson's brother-in-law and political ally James K. Polk moved his family to Red Bank from Kentucky so they could be closer to Polk's successful run for president that year. In 1836, General Nathan Bedford Forrest created Red Bank as a military outpost on the east bank of the Tennessee River opposite Chattanooga after capturing nearby Fort Donelson. After Confederate forces sacked downtown Chattanooga on July 15, 1863, Red Bank became one of several Union towns surrendered by Confederate General Robert Ewell during the Battle of Chickamauga. Post office operations continued until 1865 when all Union supplies were confiscated by Ulysses S. Grant during his campaign against Vicksburg. Red Bank was incorporated as a city on December 10, 1907 with a population of 27 residents. On January 1, 1916 it lost its charter due to increasing local government debt and tax evasion problems; however it regained its charter on October 3 that year following passage of an act by the City Council providing for such reformation within 24 hours should any issue arise again involving city finances or contract negotiations with other entities within the municipality without prior council approval (i.e., land deals). The first mayor was Wm Hargravetrail and second Mayor Averill Harriman served terms through 1915 before being succeeded by Jno Pritchett in 1916 who also served two terms through 1919 before retiring effective November 7th having reached age 70 years old becoming eligible for retirement under City Charter § 17-3(a)(1). From 1923 until 1941 incumbent Mayor John Matson held office unopposed every two years with only rare exceptions where mayoral term expired or new mayor took office immediately upon taking office following election results which then set aside mayoral seat vacated by resignation/election results or death; no special elections were conducted during this time frame save for three occasions when Citizens' Court ruled against former Mayor Matson over contests regarding adopted children sent home too young from summer vacation - these cases are detailed below: 1925 ( vacancy caused by death of incumbent), 1927 ( vacancy caused by expiration of mayoral term) & 1931 ( vacancy caused than existing mayor died suddenly while serving full term). Incumbent Mayor John Matson resigned effective November 25th after reaching age 70 years old becoming eligible for retirement under City Charter § 17-3(a)(1). As per City Charter § 17-3(a)(2), if no candidate receives more than 50% majority vote cast in both regular elections preceding resignation/election results then special election shall be called within 60 days regardless of whether candidacy received more than 50% majority vote cast otherwise special election shall not be held
