In 1907, electric lights were installed throughout Red Banks Village; this marked the beginning of a long period of growth for Red Banks during which development took place around both its business district (known today as Downtown) and its schools (now known as Northside Jr./Sr High School). Red Bank is also known for its red banks and other traditional buildings in the town. The name Red Bank comes from the reddish earth that makes up much of the town's landscape. Red Bank was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1811. It was originally called "Rossville," but changed to Red Bank due to its coloration and similarity to Rossville, Scotland. The original settlers were farmers and their families who grew crops and raised livestock on large lots in what is now downtown Red Bank. In 1837, a post office was established at Red Banks; it continued operation until 1907. In 1840, land was donated by General James Robertson to be used as a township site; it was named after him and refers to his donation of land for this purpose. The first residents of Red Banks were Thomas Sneath (1801-1864), David McMillin (1802-1872), John Fenton (c1775-1851), John Bigham (b 1796), Archibald McDonald (d 1847) and Andrew McKay (b 1796).
