Portland, Tennessee was first settled in 1815 by the McDowell family. The town’s name comes from the Welsh word for “bridge over the river.” The town rapidly grew after it was chosen as the site of a national military arsenal in 1819. The arsenal later became known as Portland State University. In 1836, Portland became a county seat and remained so until 1907 when it became a city. The Portland area was heavily damaged during World War II, but has gradually recovered since then. Today, Portland is an important center for Manufacturing and Technology companies and is home to many cultural attractions such as Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Pacific Arts Center, and Steel Bridge Park.
Portland was founded by James Robertson in 1814 as a trading post on the Tennessee River. The town gradually grew, and by 1840 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1846, Portland became the capital of Oregon Territory following the U.S. annexation of that state. The city's growth continued throughout the 1850s and 1860s as it became an important center for rail transportation and trade. By 1870, Portland had reached its peak as a major port and commercial center with a population of over 1,500 people. However, during the American Civil War, Portland was ravaged by Union forces who burned down much of the city into ruins. Following the war, Portland slowly declined until it largely disappeared from view in the late 1800s.
