As Marines in the Portland, Tennessee Marine Barracks prepared to deploy on September 11th, 2001, they were gifted some of the most eagerly awaited items in their arsenal- gift bags full of stuffed animals and teddy bears. The "Gift Bags" as they are known, were a way for Marines to show their support for their fellow servicemen and women as well as provide comfort for those Deploying during that harrowing time. Since its inception in 1997, the Marine Gift Bag Program has brought together Marines from throughout the Corps by sending them customized gift baskets filled with plush toys and other mementos from home. This year's program features specialties such as guitars and drums- both military instruments which are often used in live performance. The recipient is then able to send back a photo or video of themselves playing one of these Instruments at an event or concert. This yearsevent takes place on Saturday October 3rd at McCoy’s Memphis Bar & Grill downtown in Memphis TN where several dozen Marines will come out to play music (or just drink) while overlooking the Riverfront skyline

The Marines of the Portland, Tennessee regiment were first called to duty in 1917. The unit was reactivated in 1951 and is currently stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The Marines have provided service throughout the Pacific theater, Korea, and Vietnam. They are legend for their bravery and determination.
Portland, Tennessee is a small town located in Middle Tennessee. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. Portland was founded in 1853 as a small community on the Cumberland River by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky. The name Portland may come from an early settler's description of the river as being "a deep and wide stream that ran through pleasant country." In 1876, Portland became an incorporated city with a population of 25,000. 1st District Congressman John Fleming announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate in 1974 and won election to fill the unexpired term of then-U.S. Sen.-elect Lamar Alexander (R). In 1980, Mayor Don Henson appointed James Mebane to be Portland's first African American city manager. He served until 1984 when he was succeeded by City Manager Ron Slattery due to term limits set by then-Mayor Donny O'Leary (D). After several years of discussion and planning, groundbreaking took place on what would become known as "The Park," one of Portland's most popular tourist attractions which includes a boat ramp and a variety of water features such as canals, rapids and kayaks available for rent or purchase during certain months of the year

Portland, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by General John C. Frémont as the capital of the United States for the Northwest Territory. The city became an important military and commercial center in the Tennessee Valley region during the antebellum period. In 1849, Portland was renamed Nashville after Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general who had played a role in overthrowing Reconstruction in America. Portland's economic growth led to its annexation by Nashville in 1887. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as a result of its strategic location as a transportation hub on the supply routes connecting British and American forces fighting in Europe and Asia. Despite this growth, Detroit dominated Portland's economy until it closed its doors following the war. Afterward, Portland enjoyed low-key prosperity until it experienced rapid population growth due to suburban development and new jobs related to the post-industrial era throughout most of the late 20th century. However, recent changes have begun to reverse these trends with increased downtown revitalization and job growth outside of urban cores across much of Tennessee Valley Region."
Portland, Tennessee was first settled in 1827 by Scotsmen. It became a state in 1907 and was named for Portland, Maine. The city of Memphis began to grow rapidly after the discovery of oil resources in 1901. In 1924, the city annexed what is now the southside of Portland and built a large housing development called "The Hills".
