Fresh roasted coffee beans start being grown and roasted in Oregon about 1870. After a few years of growth, the first coffee roasters opened their doors in what is now known as Portland, Tennessee. The first batch of beans that were roasted here were from Mexico City. Coffee production began to grow rapidly here, and soon different roasters had opened up shop throughout the city. In 1915, a company called First National Coffee was formed and soon began shipping fresh-roasted coffee all over the country. The Roasting Company name comes from the fact that this was the only place where they could get good quality beans at an affordable price point. They also served as a source for ground coffee for various businesses and individuals in town. By 1925, First National Coffee had closed down but their legacy will live on through their continued contributions to the city’s coffee culture!

Portland, Tennessee is a city in the Middle Tennessee Valley region of the United States. The population was 754 at the 2010 census, up from 522 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. In February 2017, it became one of seventeen cities and counties within Nashville metropolitan area with a combined population of 2 million people. The first Europeans to enter what is now Portland were traders working for James Robertson and his group of fur traders in 1795. They named their new town after King George II’s old home in Scotland, Perth House. The town grew slowly until 1825 when General Andrew Jackson moved his army throughfork nearby Cumberland River to end the War of 1812 and founded Nashville as a military post on July 6th, 1825. Portland was chartered by an act of Congress on October 16th, 1830 as part of that city’s enlargement project following Jackson’s victory over Ulysses S Grant at Pea Ridge Battlefield two years earlier. In 1840 lumbermen from eastern Kentucky started arriving in search of rich logged land near Hillsboro Dam which they called “The Oregon Barrens” because no one had ever found any oil or gas there before. By 1850 about 150 men were working around Hillsboro Dam making logs for shipbuilding and other industries while others farmed around east Broadwater Creek where downtown now stands. In 1865 local farmers organized themselves into what would become known as The Agricultural Society to help promote agriculture in an area that had been mostly rural since before 1800. This society also built what is now Pioneer Courthouse Square just north of downtown between First Street (now Interstate 40) and Broadway (now Gay Street). At this point timber prices were so high that most people couldn't afford to build anything more than simple log cabins until recently; however brick houses began replacing pioneer-built log homes starting about 1860 thanks to money accumulated by members during protracted campaigns against high timber prices led by John Anderton who ran for Mayor several times but never won due to lackof support from business interests in early Portland
