The Portland, Tennessee Air Force Base is home to the 1st Fighter Wing of the United States Air Force. The wing was activated on July 4, 1941 and became operational on October 15th of that year. The wing has been in operation since World War II and currently flies over sixty thousand missions a year. Throughout its history, the Portland Air Force Base has given back to the community in a number of ways. In 1951, the base donated land for use as a elementary school. In 1976, they contributed $5 million to help construct and maintain an airport adjacent to the base. In 2007, they also gifted $10 million for local tornado relief efforts in Memphis and other areas hit by tornadoes that year. This money went towards rebuilding infrastructure after the disasters so that these communities could continue to thrive. Today, it is clear that the Portland Air Force Base has always had a special place in our hearts. They have been great partners with us throughout our history and we are grateful for their continued support!

In 1815, Portland became an independent town. In 1820, Portland made land purchases from the Cherokee Nation to form what is now Knox County. It voted to secede from Tennessee in 1860, and became an independent state in 1861. The Oregon Trail crossed through Portland in 1865, helping to spread American culture into this new country.
